Position: Online Editor of India in Transition, a publication of the Center for the Advanced Study of India

The Center seeks an online editor with demonstrated journalism and/or international relations experience to help extend its publication profile domestically and internationally. Working closely with faculty director, the associate director, the Center’s Webmaster, and the Center’s counterpart institution in New Delhi, the online editor will build relationships with India in Transition’s contributors, increase frequency of publication (currently a bi-weekly), and expand readership as well as its Indian newspaper syndication. Identify contributors who present their specialized knowledge in a way intelligible to the publication’s broad audience. Coordinate with article translators and syndication partners. Hire and oversee part-time student assistants (2-3) who identify relevant online research links and provide publication copyediting. Edit articles from contributors that are on average 1000 words in length. On occasion contribute a piece to the publication. An ability to coordinate the organization of colloquia and high-visibility international conferences–creatively addressing issues vital to India’s emergence as a major power–would be an additional asset.

A Bachelor’s Degree is required and 3 years to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s Degree in the Social Sciences; or a Master’s in journalism or new media journalism or dual degree in journalism and international and public affairs is highly preferred. Minimum 3 years online publication editorial experience, data management and research methodology skills, excellent computer skills including spreadsheet, layout design, and web search applications, excellent organizational, verbal and written communications skills, ability to manage multiple projects and work independently. Strong interpersonal skills a must. Demonstrated editorial competence. Proficiency in Hindi or other Indian languages would be an asset. Ideal candidate has an applied knowledge of contemporary India, web publication experience, and enthusiasm for the use of new media to influence public debate. Position contingent upon funding.   To be considered, candidates must apply through the Jobs@Penn Web site. In addition to Penn’s online application, a cover letter and resume, we ask for three letters of recommendation.
